Dr. ir. Sui, Xinxin
I am an urban hydroclimatologist, researching how urbanization alters natural rainfall and runoff processes.
“Sui” is both my last name and my nickname - feel free to call me Sui!
Education
-
Ph.D. Civil Engineering, UT Austin, USA, 2025 (defended March 28th, 2025)
-
M.S. Civil Engineering, TU Delft, Netherlands, 2019
-
B.E. Environmental Engineering, Jilin University, China, 2017
Experience
Sui, Xinxin received her Ph.D. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in June 2025, with a specialization in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. Since 2022, she has been named a Future Investigator in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology (FINESST) for her Ph.D. research.
Her doctoral work quantifies the influence of urbanization on rainfall patterns across global10, national11, and regional12scales using observation datasets. This work resulted in five first-author manuscripts, including publications in PNAS, and one currently under minor revision at Science Advances. Beyond academic circles, her research has received widespread attention and was featured in over 40 international media outlets.
Her Master’s research at TU Delft simulated rainfall-runoff processes in a semi-urbanized catchment, using the San Antonio basin as a case study. The downstream position of San Antonio City within the basin provided a unique setting to evaluate whether Low Impact Development (LID) or Best Management Practices (BMP), such as green roofs or permeable pavements, can reduce peak runoff or inadvertently intensify flooding at the catchment scale.
Prior to Ph.D. study at UT Austin, Sui worked as a research assistant at both Peking University in China and the National University of Singapore. Her academic path is both interdisciplinary and international, spanning hydrology, atmospheric science, remote sensing, and machine learning. This diverse background equips her with a broad perspective and a strong ability to identify and address complex hydroclimate challenges. She is currently on the job market and actively seeking new research opportunities following her Ph.D.
